Overview

North Yorkshire County Council’s ‘No Wrong Door’ project aimed to improve the experience of and outcomes for young people in care by building meaningful long-term relationships. No Wrong Door operates from hubs, bringing together multi-disciplinary teams including clinical psychologists, police officers and speech therapists to provide more effective and personalised support to young people in and on the edge of care. North Yorkshire are extending No Wrong Door to care leavers and to children and young people with mental health issues in schools and in pupil referral units.

North Yorkshire are also using their skills and experience to provide tailored support to other local authorities to improve their services to children and young people.

Understanding what works

The extension of the No Wrong Door methodology means every care leaver will be given a worker who tailors services to them effectively. They will stay with the care leaver until they turn 25, putting their aspirations at the centre of all planning. This aligns with government priorities on care leavers, and the wider ambition for children’s social care policy to be driven by best practice.

The extension of No Wrong Door to young people with social, emotional and mental health issues (SEMH) aims to help prevent them from being placed in out of authority placements, improve their care and better equip them for adulthood.

North Yorkshire are to improve their own practice through the implementation of reflective supervision using the systematic therapy model. They are also developing  their existing technology by linking databases together to improve security and develop a single digital view of a child.

North Yorkshire can offer support to other local authorities in the following areas: Front Door; reducing numbers of looked after children; No Wrong Door; Signs of Safety; children and family services; whole system diagnostic; family group conferencing; smart solutions; workforce development; and staffing and strategic planning frameworks.
