The National FGM Centre

Project start date: January 2015

We (Barnardo’s and the Local Government Association) were awarded £2.1m to establish a Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) prevention hub that provides practice expertise; works directly with communities; shares emerging practice; and offers consultancy and practice development opportunities to professionals to prevent, protect and treat girls and women affected by FGM.

Project Summary

The National FGM Centre (NFGM) is a partnership between Barnardo’s and the Local Government Association (LGA). We created this partnership with the aim to work in local authorities with a lower number of identified cases of FGM, where there may be limited experience working with those affected.

We offered a ‘continuum of intervention’ that combines work with Children’s services, other statutory agencies and organisations with community outreach. We provided local authorities with social workers and project workers to directly manage cases of FGM. We developed an online Knowledge hub, consultancy, practice development and training, conferences and workshops to share this learning nationally.

Due to the success of our project, we have received more funding of up to £1.7m to expand our role of the National FGM Centre. The expansion will add three high prevalence areas to the scope of the centre and extend the centre’s work to cover other harmful traditional practices.
