Belhaven Service

Project start date: January 2015

We (Priory Education Services working with Suffolk County Council) were awarded £1m to establish a residential home for young people with mental ill-health. The project aimed to provide a blueprint for similar homes that would provide mental health treatment in a local care home setting. This would reduce the risk of referral to mental health inpatient services and the breakdown of educational and care arrangements.

Project Summary

Mental health is a serious risk to children in, or on the edge of care. Children in care are currently at significant risk of mental ill-health and traditionally have less success in education systems than their peers. Because of this, they are far less likely to go on to further education and employment.

We established a local, four-bed children’s home which integrated health, care and education delivery. It provided residential support to young people in, or on the edge of care, with high levels of mental ill health. Young people were supported to continue attending their current school and were supported by a range of services appropriate to their needs, including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Suffolk Connect, psychologists, and counselling services.
