Positive Choices

Project start date: November 2016

We (Calderdale Council) were awarded up to £444k to support up to 50 young people at high risk through supporting them to become successful parents, working to reduce the level of pregnancies and number of children being taken into care whilst enabling a single point of access to essential support.

Project Summary

A significant number of looked after children and care leavers become pregnant while they are supported by the local authority, with 20% of Calderdale’s looked after children’s children being taken into care. A lack of understanding of good parenting and safe families combined with multiple dispersed support services cause confusion and risk to the outcomes for young parents. Additionally, there is a high public cost through repeat and increasing demands on services.

Our innovative solution ‘Positive Choices’ will develop a programme to support up to 50 young people over two years, focusing on those at high risk of removal and older care leavers. Our programme will provide support from early, intensive intervention when a viable pregnancy is confirmed through to becoming successful parents where a child has previously been removed. Furthermore we aim to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies that stands at approx. 70 per year and reducing the number of children being taken into care. This will be achieved through enabling a simple single point of access to essential support.
